Quinta de Paços

Quinta de Paços is a historic family winery located in the heart of the Vinho Verde region of Portugal that has been producing wines in the municipalities of Monçao and Barcelos for over 500 years. The main estate, whose name stems from a presence of a Roman palace near the site adjacent to the Roman baths in the civil parish of Rio Côvo, has been owned and farmed by the same family for 16 generations. The roughly 200 hectares of vineyards of the estate are planted in soils of granite and schist and produce wines of exceptional quality, elegance, and flavor that have been celebrated for centuries. In fact, Quinta de Paços is one of the first wineries in the region to win international acclaim for its wines, winning medals at international competitions as early as 1876 (in the United States) and 1888 (in Berlin).

Paulo Matos Graça Ramos is the current steward of his family’s tradition at Quinta de Paços and is responsible for preserving the incredibly deep roots of family and viticultural history that are represented by the estate. Paulo is also a professor at the Universidade do Porto and acts as an avid advocate for the viticulture of the region while also teaching the business of vineyard and winery management to future generations of winemakers. Based on his desire to preserve and protect the heritage of winemaking in Vinho Verde, Paulo is responsible for certifying the vineyards under the Produção Integrada system of sustainable agriculture which guarantees that the viticultural practices of the vineyard are optimally sustainable and environmentally conscious. The wines of Quinta de Paços represent the incredible depth of tradition for winemaking in this green and rainy region of Northern Portugal and the fierce pride and commitment that families have exerted in order to preserve this rich heritage.
