Located just outside of the iconic city of San Miguel de Allende in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, Viñedo San Miguel sits atop the rolling hills of the Valle de la Independencia within the Bajío of the Central Mexican plateau. The winery was established as a passion project dedicated to the beautiful and bountiful landscape that makes up this verdant region by the Cuadra family of Guanajuato in partnership with the historic Villa Petriolo winery of Tuscany. Although the winery sprung from a relatively recent process of exploration on the part of these two groups to seek out New World regions which offered the ideal geographic and climatic conditions for the production exceptional wines, the viticultural heritage of this area of Central Mexico stretches back to the early days of the Spanish conquest. The wines that are being produced by Viñedo San Miguel represent a pioneering vision of the viticultural potential of this part of Guanajuato while at the same time also signify a sort of revival of some of the most historically significant viticultural areas within Mexico as a whole.
The winery produces wines of exceptional quality and nuance with the grapes exclusively harvested from their 60 hectare (148 acre) estate. The mostly dry temperate climate of the region, combined with the 6500 foot elevation at which the vineyards sit contribute to a long growing cycle that produces grapes of excellent concentration and aromatic potential while at the same time maintaining a level of acidity and freshness that makes for beautifully-balanced wines. In addition to the 16 varieties of grapes that are grown on the estates there are also an abundance of olive orchards, lavender, avocado and mango groves, within which is nestled a 400-year-old colonial church which provides an idyllic backdrop to the beautiful expanse of the estate.
The winery itself is a meticulously and artfully designed modern facility, providing all the necessary elements for the creation of singular wines that are grown, harvested, and produced with meticulous care and attention. The head winemaker, Juan Machón, holds his doctorate in Oenology from the Polytechnic University of Valencia in Spain, and is regarded as one of the most prestigious winemakers in the country. Along with the production facility itself, Viñedo San Miguel also boasts an exceptional fine dining restaurant, events venues, meeting spaces, and a residential development adjoining the vineyards of the estate.
